Photography in Calgary
Photography in Calgary, is not all that different than other places around the world. Of course there are a few things you need to be aware of such as dealing with your equipment when it is cold outside. In general though, a photographer can basically work anywhere.
There are some things that are unique in Calgary that are photography related. These include: locations, groups, and media.
Locations
Depending on what the photographer is trying to accomplish, weddings, portraiture, landscapes, etc., there are some ideal locations in Calgary that are popular.
Many wedding photographers make use of the location known as the Rundle Ruins. The location is now a public park but was formerly the Glenmore Hospital that was built back in 1894. It is located at 12th Ave and 6th St S.E. and although the original hospital was demolished back in 1973, the remains of the historic sandstone building make a wonderful backdrop for wedding or portraiture photographers.
Groups
There are a number of active photography groups in Calgary that cater to different people. Making use of the world wide web, the Calgary Photography Group organizes events for photographers to get together for networking and to shoot.
Another group known as Calgary Glam Jam organizes events that bring together photographers, models and makeup artists to educate, network and shoot.
Media
A local photographer, Al Del Degan, produces a weekly podcast titled "I Am Aduro" that is focused on photography, modeling and fashion in Calgary.
Two Calgarians created an online networking site for photographers, models, and makeup artists called Model Republic that is gaining popularity due partly to the fact that it is attractive, feature-rich and has a very user-friendly interface.
