Overview

The northeast outer suburbs lie outside the inner city/suburbs of Calgary. The region is bordered by the city limits to the north and the east, 16 Avenue NE (the Trans-Canada Highway) to the south and Deerfoot Trail to the west.

The northeast outer suburbs are part of city wards 3 and 5, represented by aldermen Jim Stevenson and Ray Jones respectively.

Demographics

The total population of the region was roughly 151,421 people in 2007. The most highly populated communities in the region are Coventry Hills with 13,890 residents and Martindale with 12,117 residents.[1][2]

The average population is around 8,000 residents per community, with the most sparsely populated communities being Sunridge with 13 residents and Saddle Ridge Industrial with 57 residents.

The largest portion of residents are ages 25-34, representing approximately 17.9% of the total population of the southwest outer suburbs,. The 35-44 demographic is a close second, representing roughly 17.5% of the total population of the region.

The average household income of the region is around $64,000 annually. Falconridge is the lowest- income community in the region, with an average household income of $48,512 in 2000, while Coral Springs was the wealthiest neighborhood with an average household income of $83,067. [3][4]

Residents of immigrant origin make up 30.3% of the population of the northeast outer suburbs, compared with the citywide average of 21.8%, making the region significantly more diverse than the whole of Calgary. The largest percentage of immigrants across both wards in the northeast outer suburbs are from India; however, there is also a strong United Kingdom, Filipino and Chinese presence in those communities. [5][6]

Housing

Across both wards that make up the northeast outer suburbs, the majority of housing in 2001 was single detached homes. [7][8] There is also a significant number of row houses and a much smaller contingent of apartment complexes and detached duplexes than the communities closer to the downtown core of Calgary.
