Driver's Licence and Vehicle Registration

Overview
Alberta law states that to own and operate a motor vehicle in the province, you must obtain a valid driver's licence and properly register and insure your vehicle.
Albertans insure their vehicles through private companies, much the same as they insure their homes.
How to Obtain an Alberta Driver's Licence
To obtain an Alberta driver's licence, you must visit one of the registry agents in the city. If you are moving from another province in Canada, you can exchange your valid out-of-province licence for an Alberta licence.
If you are moving from the United States, you can exchange your licence for an equivalent Alberta licence, but only Class 5, 6 or 7. For licence class definitions, visit Service Alberta's page on driver's licenses.
Alberta has reciprocal agreements with Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and the United Kingdom (excluding Northern Ireland). This means immigrants from those countries can exchange their valid licences of equivalent class for a Class 5 licence in Alberta.[1]
Regardless of place of origin, applicants must present immigration and residency documentation and acceptable identification. Visit Service Alberta's page on driver's licences for more information.
Registering a Vehicle in Calgary
The same registry agents that offer driver licences also provide the province's residents with vehicle registration and licence plates. To register a vehicle at one of the registry agents, ensure you provide identification and all the proper documentation on your vehicle, previous registration and insurance information.
Albertans insure their vehicles through private insurance companies, who often offer car insurance bundled with home, life or other types of insurance. Visit Alberta Finance and Insurance's page on consumer information for more information on insurance companies operating in Alberta.
