Best of Calgary Photo Submissions

Congratulations to Robert Scott, winner of the Calgarypedia 'Best of ' photo contest! Moderator's note: the winning photo is no longer online.
Shot early morning on top of the roof at the new Court House. It was early June, very foggy and deathly quiet that morning. A far cry from what it's really like down on the street. For me, this photo illustrates how very different Calgary can be when situated in the heart, downtown and high up.
It seems as though Calgary is in a perpetual state of construction, however this can make for some unique photo opportunities. This is a shot of condo construction near the corner of 12th Ave. and 5th St. SW. I love the contrast, clean lines, and texture.

"Landmark" presents two iconic symbols of the city of Calgary to citizens and newcomers. These are galvanizing attributes of our downtown core. The Calgary Tower symbolizes prowess yet increasingly, as days go by, less so as it is dwarfed by newer, taller and more impressive structures. However this photo is composed in such a way that it stands far above neighboring buildings. Also prominently featured are the arches of the Olympic Plaza, reminding us of one of Calgary's proudest defining moments as a city, especially as the Vancouver Winter Olympics near. This picture reflects on accomplishment, pride and community. Photo taken January 9, 2009. Photo Copyright 2009 Craig Windrim, http://www.cdubphoto.smugmug.com
"Winds of Change" by Arlene Barr. After living abroad for 6 years, it is a pleasure to be living back in Calgary again. With the growth of our city has come many opportunities to explore and experience the "Best of Calgary". From our extensive parks to playing different organized sports, Calgary is a great place to raise our family. This picture was taken from the Max Bell arena in early fall. "THINKCALGARY" -- When I think of "Best of Calgary" I inherently think of the Canadian Rockies which are quite literally at our doorsteps. Whenever we have company from out of town they inevitably ask when we will be going to Banff and the mountains, then secondly they want to see our landmarks ie: The Calgary Tower, Saddledome, C.O.P. and the Calgary Stampede. The mountains offer not only a multitude of activities to enjoy during all four seasons both also has some of the most stunning scenery in the world. This photo was taken in Oct 2008 at the overlook of Tunnel Mountain and includes the Hoodoos, the Bow Valley, Bow River and surrounding wilderness. Photo Credit June Meahan
This image was taken from the Grandstands during the 2008 Calgary Stampede. Though there is so much more to Calgary than this annual event, it is surely on the "Must See" Lists of folks worldwide, thus making it a true "Best of Calgary". Photo credit Sharon Giles
"Calgary by night" by Matthew Birks. This shot was taken from the overlook on 2nd Ave NE, just off Centre Street NE. Calgary's downtown core is vibrant and exciting if you know where to look and I think this photograph captures the biggest, small city in the West perfectly.

Graduation Night 2008, Scotsman Hill. This picture will always remind me the night high school was on the home stretch of being over, and that this is not only my city, but ours. The landmarks of the Calgary Tower, Banker's Hall, and an edge of the Pengrowth Saddledome capture the city's skyline. Photo Copyright Shamus Hardie.

When I ThinkCalgary, I always think of the adventure, growth and opportunity that draws people from not just all over the country, but from all around the world. It is the warmth of the people here who cultivate and nurture these things and who are proud to build this city together and lead the way into the future. There is no other place in all of Canada that I would rather call home. Photo Credit Lance Littlewood Shot taken from Eau Claire looking towards SAIT.
